Google probably is looking at the distribution of BLs (number, quality, quantity of each particular quality level, etc), anchor text, etc to see that it appears consistent with a natural pattern. The problem is if they insist on these natural patterns the only sure way to rank will be to ensure that you *appear* natural. Plus patterns aren't the same with all types of sites and there is no way they can possibly have a profile for every site type to fit into and be accurate. It's going to fuck up. The thing is it doesn't hurt them one bit. Only webmasters so they just don't care.
