Man nearly crushed in garbage truck
June 17, 2003
A MAN was dumped into a garbage compactor when a truck emptied the industrial bin he was sleeping in in Brisbane today.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Tom Jones said the truck driver compacted the rubbish twice before hearing the man's cries for help.
Mr Jones said the man was lucky to have escaped injury, but was very distressed by the incident.
The man, aged in his mid-30s, had gone to sleep in the bin in inner city Fortitude Valley to escape the cold, he said.
The bin was picked up by a Collex garbage truck about 5am (AEST) today.
Mr Jones said the truck driver went to Kemp Place fire station after hearing the man's cries for help and officers used a ladder to reach him.
He was treated by ambulance officers at the scene and taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital for observation.
