"emergencies" are short term. After a month or so it becomes a "situation". The design community has trained us all that the way to get your projects done is to be the biggest pain in the ass possible and to throw in a dash of public embarrassment wherever needed.
And paying more than half up front is just stupid, also inconsiderate. Its a good way to guarantee a death in your designers family, with an internet outage and a bad hard disk thrown in for good measure.
I wouldn't want all those horrible things to happen to my designer just because I paid too much upfront and they had to prioritize clients who were still dangling carrots.
