The world is a lot smaller now than it was then and in many ways there is more accountability now. So, there are less crazy risks being taken. Add to that years of legislation and regulation in every country for something that traditionally has been so deep int he closet no one bothered to make laws.
That, in my mind is the reason why it seems tamer than it used to be, that and Brazilian waxing.
