I think the opening scene was the answer they were seeking but didn't get.

What wasn't 100% clear was if the opening scene was done on purpose or was it an accident (his death). Then the ending of the movie, she is going on to see where the engineers came from, which leads to the thought of THE answer of who created us may never be answered, as someone would have created another, and so on and so forth. But that leaves it wide open for a sequel.

I also want to know why they were trying to wipe out earth after they created it. That partially makes me think that the creation of earth was an accident, or they created earth "because they could." Hopefully the next one will put all of that together.
