With all respect, and me not knowing all the details, but why don't you just sue them? He's in the US, you are in the US, he owes you a large sum? You have no cure/no pay lawyers over there?
Let's say someone owes me $50k here in France, and it's like a clear simple debt, and I can proof it, I hire a lawyer and the first thing he'll do is confiscate some of his belongings, after that he'll start a legal procedure.
I wouldn't go to court for less than $5000 because lawyers cost money to and when they're done working for you they will stab you in your back (lol!) but if someone would owe me $50k.... damn I would even consider hiring a contract murderer!
