To be fair though it can work rather well if you have a more valuable commodity to back your fiat currency with, i.e. oil hence the birth of the Petrodollar and having the ability to defend that new standard with the biggest and best military on the planet

You nailed it earlier with what you said about the history of Europe, imo the leaders are shit scared of history repeating itself with more wars if the euro collapses so they will do everything possible to hold this union together plus there is also the fact it took so so long to setup through so many agreements that they don't want it to fail at any cost.
