In truth he most probably did know, but nowhere have I read anything about him designing the gas chambers.

In May 1943 Speer expanded Auschwitz, making it a death camp. Speer made notes in his handwriting on the sides and in the margin; He knew exactly what they were building there. In his book he claims he had no idea what they were for, yet he signed off on all of the designs. He knew exactly what was going on.
