Just note.large, integrated packages were popular 1995-2005. As a whole, the software industry is returning to the tried and true philosophy of individual components which do one thing and do it well, sometimes with a thin interface layer which bring the discrete components together VISUALLY.
An example of why would be a CMS designed five years ago. It would likely be heavily reliant on Flash, which is now being retired, and would likely have ignored mobile, which is now very important. A highly integrated "do everything" CMS designed five years ago would be useless today. Where integration is important, an easily updateable CMS would be a thin interface atop jwplayer and smarty, but preferably keeping components as seperate as possible. RSS was a big deal a few years ago. Now it's Facebook and Wordpress. A simple, single purpose gallery builder can integrate with either.
