Try reading "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln"
Lincoln ran on the platform of freeing the slaves. Since this was before the Civil War, it wasn't to break the South's back. For him it was a matter of religious conviction.
Once in office, he didn't attempt to free the slaves, as he didn't have the authority. It would take congress. With the South having about 1/2 the votes that wasn't going to happen.
After the Civil War started, Lincoln was having enough trouble just keeping what was left of congress from starting a Civil War inside a Civil War.
For most of the Civil War Blacks couldn't fight for the Union as most troops refused Blacks in their units or anywhere near Blacks.
