If you're comparing a situation involving a single woman without kids to one involving a single woman with a kid, then you've missed the plot completely. There is no "reason" in that comparison.
A mother's obligation first and foremost is to that child. Any man that comes along has to take that into serious consideration before he commits to that woman.
Speaking specifically to your nitpicking on exes though, obviously the important ex relevant to this topic is the father of that child. He is the one whose offspring will infringe in some way on a potential relationship, whether one likes it or not.
Instead of managing a relationship for two, one instantly has to accommodate for at least three (the child), if not four (the "baby daddy") different parties in that equation.
I'm not saying that it's not workable. I'm just saying that it's one less thing to worry about in life.
