Actually no, it's not "as simple as that". If there is a system available already that we can customize then that would be MUCH simpler than getting one coded from scratch.
For example, if someone was looking for an affiliate system, then getting one custom coded would be considerably more difficult than simply deploying MPA3 or NATS.
I agree that in some situations custom is your best option but there are times when re-inventing the wheel is foolish.
