I don't live in fear of going to the movies, the mall, or sending my kid to college. The odds of me or my child facing something like this is pretty much nil.

My problem is we hand guns out like it's candy. My friend just got a divorce. His beautiful wife just drop kicked, he lost his house, lives in a crappy apartment, and he has no fucking social skills what so ever. He always wanted a gun, wife wouldn't let him, and now that he doesn't answer to his wife he decided to go out and get one. He passed the background check and went through the waiting period, but no one ever said "Hey, this guy just went through divorced and lost everything and there might be a problem here". They just said "okay" and now he's got a handgun even though he's a perfect candidate for loosing it all and going on a shooting spree.

There's no classes, no training, no mental check, no nothing.

Take guns out of it. We don't let people drink until they are twenty-one because they are not responsible enough to be trusted with drinking... Yet we have no fucking problem handing out a driver's license at age sixteen. Can't trust a twenty year with a beer, but we can trust a sixteen year old to pilot a guided missile down the same streets you and I drive. Not sure about you, but when I was sixteen I was a horrible driver - and I had a list of tickets and accidents to prove it. I totaled two cars before I was nineteen.

At the same time, the guns that are out there need to be locked down. It's a pretty simple concept - I don't live my keys in my car and no one can take my car. If you own a firearm, it needs to be physically on you or locked up, no exceptions. Telling me it's in your nightstand isn't good enough - your kid can get it, someone else's kid can get it, anyone can break into your house and get it.

At Lightspeed Cash we had a programmer and one night while I was with him he got pulled over. I had no fucking clue but he had enough firepower in the trunk of his car to start a serious war. He handguns, rilfes, and shotguns... He also a MAC10 and an Uzi. Why the fuck does a programmer need to carry a dozen firearms in his car on a daily basis?
