Tomorrow, next year, 10 years from now, 30 years from now, they will eventually disarm the public.
They already did it with EASE during hurricane Katrina and they were damn efficient at it, so when it happens on a national level, shy of a few guys who try to make a stand (and get gunned down), most people will hand them over without a fight.
As the system breaks down, the last thing any government wants is a well armed population. Sticks, stones, and Molotov cocktails are no match for an armed local / federal government.
