I'm not saying taking away guns. I'm saying we need to raise the barrier to getting guns.
I'm a forty-three year old former US Marine and I have five identical assault riles in my house. Doesn't it strike anyone as being strange? No one comes to my house to inspect them once every other year, no one checks me out to make sure I'm not seeing a shrink....
My wife had a gun once. She was rather vague about where she got it from; It was just a small handgun. Twenty years later, oddly enough, we aren't sure what happened to it. I knew we had it in Danville (CA) when we first started dating, but shortly afterwards it disappeared. We aren't sure where or when. The problem is someone somewhere most likely has that handgun. There is no fucking tracking for any of this.
It's just like getting your driver's license. Pretty much if you can pass an eye test you can drive. You don't need a doctor's note proving your physically fit. Nearly every one has seen that video this week of the white SUV driving in the wrong direction, which is blamed on some "medical condition". My ten year old kid needs a physical to be in sports, but no one needs a physical to drive a car down the road with other drivers? When your twenty-five, that's fine. When your sixty-nine like my mother, that's fucking scary.
Is it asking too much to require us to have our firearms inspected once a year if only to prove that we still have them? Is it asking too much to require medical facilities to inform the state or federal government of any medical reasons someone shouldn't own a gun? Is it asking too much that if someone beats down their wife that their firearms be taken away from them?
If your doctor believes you are unable to drive a care safely, they can take away your DL. They should do the same with guns. On Medication for depression? First thing they should do before they hand over your pills is see if you have a gun permit.
