Of course it exists, but there's not a lot you can do about those links and stuff or to prevent it from happening again. Besides, real bh negative seo goes a lot further and is a lot more evil than a few xrummer blasts.
The best way to handle it is the same way you handle all other seo related risks: don't put all of your eggs in one basket.
Instead of building one site and hoping for the best and begging Big G to reconsider when they drop/penalize your site, just build more sites and hide who owns them.
