Here's some study material for those interested...
Start with the "total information awareness network" and Information Awareness Office" project (DARPA, DIA, NSA)
One of the rare wiki articles w/ accurate info, search wikipedia for: "Information_Awareness_Office" "Components_of_TIA_projects_that_continue_to_be_de veloped"
Bits and pieces of this have come out over a long period of time. Remember the AT&T fiber tapping scandal? That was an early indicator of a predecessor program which folded into "Basketball" (yes, I'm a former SAIC consultant). We had a different name for the monster, we called it "the big black marble" or "deathstar.com".
Planned and current data mining tentacles of the Blacksketball -
- electronic medical and Rx records in Federal databases
- RFID tagging of EVERYTHING w/ real time tracking and ident capabilities
- RFID for humans
- Fusion centers (consolidation of civil / criminal records and intel into Federal DB's)
- Social network profiling and fingerprinting (you can't hide, trust me if they want to know who you really are they can easily determine it using methods you can't even imagine yet).
And of course, if all else fails the NSA reads / listens to every form of communication inside and outside the US. The distinction between foreign and internal vanished about 2 years before 9/11. They read your emails, listen to your phone calls and can wiretap your house, car, workplace, etc without stepping foot anywhere near those locations.
The next gen of computing was the hold up to TIA going full throttle, there aren't enough humans to analyze all the signals / data. Then IBM came up with this thing called "Watson". A cool tech demo of a very lightweight version of the big black marble.
In all honesty unless you move to a unibomber cabin you're already fucked but why make it easier for them?
