To this day no ones knows. Even claims of his DNA of letters sent to the news an police is questioned. A mystery that will probably stand the test of time.
There was a similar case in Kansas City. Police couldn't find evidence, (just before DNA became used) so they jammed the guy up on passing bad checks. Got maximum time, the police hoping they could find more evidence.
