This is a little bit different than Florida. For a hurricane, you know it's coming, you can prepare for it, stock up, evacuate. With the earthquake we had zero prep time and zero warning. You went on a camping trip, fully prepared and stayed in hotels.
We got by - We cooked up any food that would go bad on the BBQ, and I worked in a restaurant nearby so I was able to get canned goods. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying it took me by surprise.
The same with the propane fire. People had fifteen minutes warning they had to leave their houses "until further notice". And don't say "We couldn't have a propane fire here because we don't have propane". In our case we have a train running through our town and it delivers propane to a "propane farm" where they store it. But all towns have natural gas, oil storage containers, etc - So it can happen anywhere.
I'm just saying be prepared.
