But a "flat tax"? Why? You're going to tell someone making $20k they have to pay the same tax rate as a billionaire?
A progressive tax is totally sensible. I WANT to pay higher taxes on my 250,000th dollar than I do on my $40,000th. Give me the lower tax rate when I really NEED it, I'll make it up by paying more when I really can SPARE it.
