I have a friend that I've known forever who was on some benefits/welfare and I can't believe the bullshit she went through/put up with to get any kind of help.
She got royally fucked in a divorce, laid off from her dispatcher job soon after, and got stuck taking care of her 3 kids with very little help from her exhusband (years later she's STILL going to court over child support)...and then her van broke down months later. Everything bad that could happen, basically happened to her.
I would watch her kids or go with her to some of the places while she applied to get some kind of assistance and I was amazed at just how hard it was to get help and even if you did get help, just how much bullshit you would have to go through (including some waiting lists that were YEARS long)...it was like a job in itself.
