RIALTO - Rodney King, whose beating by police officers led to the 1992 Los Angeles riots, was in an alcohol-induced delirium and had PCP, cocaine and marijuana in his system at the time of his death in his backyard swimming pool, according to an autopsy report.

Those factors - detailed in a report released Thursday by the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office - contributed to King's death, which has been ruled an accident.

"There is nothing in the history or autopsy examination to suggest suicide or homicide, and the manner of death is therefore judged to be (an) accident," examiners wrote in the report.

King, 47, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.06 percent at the time of his death June 17.

He also had an enlarged heart and other cardiac issues.

Rialto police Capt. Randy DeAnda said the coroner's findings fall in line with his department's investigation.

"The investigation is now completed, and basically the autopsy and toxicology reinforces our conclusions," DeAnda said.

Examiners said the combination of drugs, alcohol and his heart problems "probably precipitated a cardiac arrhythmia and the subject, thus incapacitated, was unable to save himself and drowned."

But the findings clashed with statements made by King's family in the report.

King's brother, Zhan Paul King, told investigators that his brother wasn't using "hardcore street drugs," including PCP, anymore. He said King smoked marijuana

and drank.
Zhan King also said his brother had been in a good spirits before his death.

"Zhan said King had been doing very well and was happy," according to the coroner's report. "King had been on a book tour, promoting his book for the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots. King had been flying in and out of town frequently and seemed to have his life in order."

King became a public figure in 1991 when a witness videotaped four Los Angeles police officers beating King brutally. The video, which was broadcast nationwide, inflamed racial tensions.

The officers were charged with assault, and when they were acquitted, one of the most violent race riots in U.S. history broke out in Los Angeles.

But in later years, King had become a neighbor like any other, said Bob Carlberg, 53, who lives down the street.

"He was just a friendly guy, a guy who would get auto parts from me and talk cars," Carlberg said.

King's fiancee, Cynthia Kelley, told investigators King had been drinking throughout the day and into the night. He smoked marijuana with a friend in the backyard.

Kelley, who was a juror during King's civil trial, went to bed at 2:45 a.m. but woke up less than

three hours later when she heard King pounding on the sliding glass patio door.
He screamed, "Baby, come and help me!" according to the report.

She said King was grunting and growling and had his underwear down to his knees. He fell backward onto a planter, prompting Kelley to run to dial 911.

She then heard a splash in the pool and returned outside. She found King's nude body face-down at the bottom of the pool.

Kelley used a pitchfork and a hoe to jab King, who family members said was an excellent swimmer, and try to wake him up. Kelley said she is not a good swimmer and was afraid to enter the water.

Rialto police arrived, pulled King from the pool and performed CPR on him. He died at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton at 6:11 a.m.
