The pilgrims were running from religious persecution.
The pilgrims didn't draft the Declaration of Independence. That came a 156 years after the pilgrims landed.
Thomas Jefferson would greatly disagree with your statement about religion. He was very anti-religion. As were most of the founding fathers. Quick google search for "Thomas Jefferson And Religion" will show you that.
Matter of fact...Jefferson was more of a Deist than a Christian.
Our country has become religiously fanatical in modern times (the last 70 years or so).
