First of all, this isn't the end of the season. It's a mid-season finale.
I think if not tonight, eventually we're going to see Skylar and Jesse have a talk about Walt and what he's become -- and what can be done about it. Not killing him, because that's not the kind of people they are, but they both realize he's a different person now.
Walt's hubris is out of control, and it can only end one way if he keeps it up.
