Don't thank him. Your domain is worth about $7.50 on a good day - if you're walking downhill with the wind at your back.
You COULD develop something that might make it worth eight bucks a year. As a saleable domain name? Just let it expire and let your registrar enjoy the six cents they'll make off it.
Or put it up for auction. No reserve.
