The sounds people are hearing "could" be the effects on dark-matter interacting with the earth's magnetic field.

Since this is the first time in modern history we have come into a period of increase solar activity, the scientific community is really not sure what additional effects could there be on the earth. I guess we just have to wait and see.

In any case, I find all of this stuff to be extremely interesting.
link? and WTF does dark matter have to do with this, thats crazy talk.

the northern lights happen up where the air is too thin to transmit sound waves, so that seems unlikely.

The solar activity we are having now is high, but not yet extremely high, it's still well within recent historical limits, last I checked. We are still waiting to see if this could be the beginning of a large cycle maximum.

I've heard the radio wave effects of metorites, thats one way that EM up in the upper atmosphere can cause sounds down here - but that sound is very different, a soft crackling hiss.

But I'd be happy to see supporting links.
