the northern lights happen up where the air is too thin to transmit sound waves, so that seems unlikely.
The solar activity we are having now is high, but not yet extremely high, it's still well within recent historical limits, last I checked. We are still waiting to see if this could be the beginning of a large cycle maximum.
I've heard the radio wave effects of metorites, thats one way that EM up in the upper atmosphere can cause sounds down here - but that sound is very different, a soft crackling hiss.
But I'd be happy to see supporting links.
