Looking at GDP, neither Hungary nor Poland nor the Czech Rep. are close to Spain. Poland does trump Portugal, though.
Also, I don't equate safety in determining whether a country is third world. to me it's all about the economy, standard of living and monthly wages. BTW - not putting down any Eastern European country - or any country for that matter.
Myself, I'm packing my bags and moving to a third-world country in January, ableit on a different continent than Europe.
