Has the King been dethroned?

I never thought traffic was king. For me it was conversions that counted. Those who could convert more per 1,000 surfers would always win over those who couldn't. You can have a shop on the best street in the world, doesn't mean you will sell anything. You can have a shop on a street in Bombay with 10,000s of people walking past it every day, doesn't mean you will sell anything.

Did we worship a false king, did we elevate traffic to above it's station? Yes in the early day it seemed anything would sell. That didn't last long and a lot didn't adapt to the changes and even with traffic their sales never kept pace.

Today the problem isn't getting traffic, it's getting enough traffic to sell them something and the better the product, the more it will sell, attract traffic and produce revenue. Was that so different in the past?

So what was king. Traffic, Conversions or Profit?
