My parents did something similar really. My father died when I was nine months old and both my mother and I collected social security. My mother on my behalf until I was eighteeen, and my mother collected until she re-married. In fact, they put off their marriage a few years so they could continue collecting the money.
But the question is do they still have to pay into the system when they are working? Its like SS, I think most wealthy would chose to opt out if they could but then the system would suffer without their support.
