Google does hundreds of changes to the algo every year with the goal of providing better search results to the end user. If you think for a minute that their main purpose is to not provide quality content your nuts. If the current emd, panda and penguin updates are providing less quality content sites showing up, my prediction is that will change. I notice that my sites with 1100 plus words are performing well as far as ranking on google. And I am starting to test sites with even more quality content than that. My personal goal is to try to stay ahead of the curve. My point is that quality content is very very important for SEO.
