Taken for granted? Diamonds aren't rare at all, the entire business is a huge marketing scam. You might as well go dig up a fucking pebble in your backyard and have it set into a ring, it would be no more common than a diamond. The only reason they're as expensive as they are is because of companies like De Beers having a near monopoly on diamond mining and manipulating the market, fixing prices, and engaging in all kinds of other exploitative and borderline criminal practices. At least with the pebble in your backyard you won't have to live with the moral burden of knowing that your wife's rock was mined by some eight-year-old Sierra Leonean slave kid put to work by some African warlord in the diamond mines after his family was beaten, tortured, and driven off their land. Of course, most women are vapid cunts who don't give a shit who suffers and dies for their sparkly accoutrements, so I don't think that argument is gonna work.
