you can use a laptop as a desktop.
just plug a keyboard, mouse and another screen (so you have dual screen, for those that like a command center) and there you go!
you can also sit the laptop on an elevated laptop platform if you dont like to bend you neck down to look at the laptop screen.

the extra laptop advantage here would be that you can unplug it from the "desktop setup" and take it with you... to another room, to a meeting, on a trip...

of course if you require high proccessing capacity for video editing or renderings or whatever, a desktop will be better, but for web work I dont see the desktop advantage. really.
