Another way of putting it is that the guy in position 10 paid the people lower than him shittier and shittier wages until they couldn't afford to drink with him.
Had he paid himself just 10% less of the 10,000,000 he made every year and paid the 9th person 2% less of the 1,000,000 he made every year he could double the salaries of the remaining people leaving the 8th man at his current salary.
Then everyone would truly be happy.
