One of the most loyal breeds I have encountered are Golden Labs. Again, maybe a little too big, but it might be difficult to find a dog more loyal or attached to you.

Like others have suggested, I would checkout shelters and rescues in your area. And as has already been mentioned, a lot of puppies are given for Christmas gifts and then basically abandoned or end up in shelters/rescues. If you can't find one now, chances are you will in the days and weeks following Christmas.

Personally, we have a couple of Siamese Cats (Seal Point and Lynx Point) and they can be quite entertaining
We had 2 retired greyhounds when I was a kid, they are great dogs, dont bark, both were good with cats and both of them lazy as fuck, you had to drag them round the park, they wanted to plot up by the fire, or in the summer sleep in the garden.
