Well, technically, you can fuck up peoples sites without touching them. Pages strength is determined by the volume and weight of inbound links. As such, all pages are connected and linked indirectly to all others. When one is affected, all are affected (albeit in most cases, unnoticeable). When a page is doing well because it has a few good links front strong sites and strong sites tank because their own inbound links were devalued or they suffered some other penalty, the pages that page links to are affected as their outbound links now carry less weight.
This is what retards never understand about updates. Its not always about "what did i do wrong" - you might see a big drop in the SERPs because of the new absence or devaluation of the links that put you there to begin with. Then people frantically start changing their own sites causing more damage (hoes.com, jays-xxx-links et al - many great examples of this - where powerhouse sites spun out into a series of panic moves that hastened their downfall)
