Man vs Food premiered on TV in 2009. You just noticed? Welcome to last years news.
Excess is not universal amongst Americans, and we certainly do not hold exclusive rights to gluttony. Check in with any culture on the globe, and you will find many celebrations that include feasts and excessive eating / drinking. Especially the Christian cultures celebrating Carnival, Fasching, Fiesta, Mardi Gras before Lent.
Back in '82 to 83', I used to go to a Gasthaus in Germany that featured a massive Chicken Cordon Bleu. The entree was so big it overlapped the sides of the plate, the customary Pomme Frittes and Red Cabbage salad had to be served on another plate. If you could finish the mail and all sides, your meal was free. The Gasthaus was very popular with the locals. Enjoyed Fasching, Oktoberfest and the Wine Festivals too.
