Sci-fi has to be at least plausible, or, they have to explain WHY they can do something stupid like this to at least cover themselves.

Of all the things to be bothered by in Prometheus, that would be the least screwy thing. The main scientist guy(Holloway) was kind of a wild card, and that scene was mostly to show his character a bit. Shaw based her faith on religion, but his was based on science. He noticed the terraforming and took a leap of faith based purely on science that there would be breathable air.
It was a ridiculous thing to do, but it made sense for that guy's character.
