Yup, when I was in 6th form (17-18 yrs for non UK people), my physics project was to come up with something useful for society... my porject detailed a car sensor (front) that worked on sonar and worked for two purposes - primary purpose was to judge the distance between your car and the car in front and adjust your speed to maintain a safe driving distance and the second was to aid in parking based on the same physics/concept

I got a 1st in the marking and it was back in 1987. My A-level books that I have stored in the loft prove prior knowledge if I could ever be arsed to sue mercedes (I think that marketed this idea in 92 or thereabouts).
Voila.
Apart from that, I am always inventing, like today a way to get the most crooked christmas tree on earth to stand vertical.
It is now vertical and beautiful in my lounge.
And the kids love it.
