One of the coolest things I had ever seen was a show on PBS about this. Back around 2005 or so, Darpa held a contest to all the tech universities to come up with a self driving car. The teams jammed sensors and computers into Toyota trucks, GM Hummers, etc. The cars had to get from point A to point B travelling through the desert along a set path that was about 80 miles long or something like that.
The first year none of the cars got very far, but the year after most of the cars passed the finish line. The coolest part though, showed 1 car passing another car and overtaking the lead to win. You should have seen the team of programmers jumping up and down. It was amazing.
You could probably find this on youtube somewhere.
