A lot of registrars don't do phone support since it costs more.
Dynadot is maybe 30 cents higher ($9.99 .coms) than moniker, and they offer phone support until 6pm PST. Name.com is around $10.25 with a coupon and they also offer phone support until 6pm PST. They're both really good registrars with great track records and both have coupons. Privacy is extra at dynadot, but i free at Name.com with coupon code
PRIVACYPLEASE
NameSilo is a newer registrar, and they have the cheapest prices around. $8.99 for a .com. You can get a buck off your order with coupon
BUCKOFF. Privacy is free at NameSilo. They mostly do online support but it appears they have a phone number you can contact during business hours. They're definitely up and coming and I've had good experiences there.
All 3 of the above registrars have good bulk systems. NameSilo and Dynadot might be a little easier control panels than name.com.

I'm wondering how often these moniker glitches actually occur? Have you ever had an issue which persisted which did not allow you to renew your domains?

Often enough that I've been moving all of my domains out of there. I have about three left now, and those are being transferred out soon. Maybe 2 months ago I had problems renewing a domain but I was able to renew it before it expired.
I really used to like Moniker, but not anymore. They've been bought and sold 2 or 3 times in the last couple years and that's roughly when they started going downhill for me.
