Phoenix police said an officer was shot about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of 21st and Georgia avenues and a suspect had been apprehended.
Sgt. Trent Crump said the officer sustained a gunshot to the face and to the abdomen. He said the injuries were serious but non-life-threatening, adding that the officer, whose name he did not release, was talking at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.
The officer was shot by a man who was possibly riding a bicycle and who was found just before 10 p.m. hiding in a Phoenix shed, Crump said. The suspect, whom authorities did not identify, had been shot as well as injured by a K-9, Crump said. An officer at the scene said the man was found at Vermont and 20th avenues.
Authorities believe the gunman may have tried to break into a house.
Police were still combing the scene for evidence and had located a weapon.
?We believe the situation is stabilized,? Crump said.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Police Chief Daniel Garcia were at the hospital Sunday night awaiting word on the officer?s condition.
Police said several closed intersections were expected to reopen soon, including 19th Avenue from Camelback Road to Bethany Home Road.
Valley Metro said Sunday-night service had been suspended at the 19th Avenue and Montebello Metro light-rail station.
