It is really kind of sad, but at least they are a step up from homeless and on the street.
In 1985 I moved to NYC and was sort of homeless, I spent a lot of time meeting street people and hanging out in the tunnels of the subways and under the port authority bus terminal. There were a lot of people down there and believe it or not there were quite a few that had managed to get some very large animal cages, like big dog cages, and they would live in those things. They would even padlock themselves in sometimes so no one could get in I guess. I think in more recent times they call these people '
Mole People'.
