The US justice system has been fucked every since Al Capone got convicted for tax evasion rather than his criminal activities. It was that point in history that the Justice Dept realized they didn't have to get convictions on the main crimes but could get them on anything that might stick.
This has resulted in people being charged with numerous different crimes any when a DA seeks to convict them. American justice has become less about guilt or innocence but rather what can they get to stick.
The DA's & DOJ no longer worry if someone is guilty but rather what they can get them convicted of. It's all about their conviction stats rather than if justice was served.
