Salary
At all levels of service, LAPD Officers earn competitive salaries. There are regular raises and opportunities for promotion. In addition, Officers have opportunities to earn bonuses based on special skills such as fluency in a foreign language or hazard pay for specialized assignments.
Base Salary
The starting base salary for high school graduates is $47,042. If you have at least 60 college semester units, with an overall GPA of 2.0 or better, you will start at $48,942. If you have a BA or BS (four year) degree you will start at $50,842. Police Officer salary increases after successful completion of the 6-month Police Academy, with annual salary increases thereafter up to $83,311.
You begin earning your full salary on your first day of Academy training.

New Police Officers (POs) are hired at salary Step 1 of Schedule A unless advance step hiring applies.* After 6 months of service, POs I receive the first step increase and, after 12 months of additional service, receive another step increase and promote to PO II. Thereafter, annual salary step increases are received up to Step 6 of Schedule A. After completing the salary steps of Schedule A, POs II receive their next annual step increase beginning at Step 2 of Schedule 2, and receive annual step increases thereafter up to Step 7.

Sick Leave and Disability Benefits
Sworn employees receive 12 days of 100 percent paid sick leave, five days at 75 percent, and five days at 50 percent, upon hiring and each year while employed. Employees may accumulate up to 100 days at 100 percent, 75 percent, and 50 percent paid sick leave. Employees are eligible for a service-connected disability retirement from the date of graduation from basic training.
Vacation and Holidays
Sworn employees receive 15 days of vacation per year after one year of service and 23 days per year after ten years. Every sworn employee also receives a total of 13 paid floating holidays per year; one day every four weeks.
