My first drive across the U.S. was in 1978, in a brand new Ford Fiesta (40+ mpg) on smooth highway that was only 20 years old. The U.S. has not done real great in the road maintenance department and they are just now getting back to the fuel efficiency that they achieved in the 70's.

technological advances aside i would say your generation (my parents i guess) had it better than i. not so much when they were kids as it seemed a lot more typical to live in poverty back then but when they were adults, the economy kicked ass and things were made by americans/canadians but what happened? certain members of that same generation fucked the whole world over by creating a false economy based on debt. and now people like myself have to attempt to raise a family in a much less stable environment than my parents did.
