He was in Hitler Youth, he was a kid and had no choice, neither did his family, unless they wanted to be killed. He wasn't a Nazi nor were any members of his family. The German people do bear considerable responsibility for Hitler, but to think all Germans were behind him is wrong - even many Nazis realized, albeit too late, that he was out of his mind.
Always amazes me that these ancient religions still exist, wield such power and cause such death and destruction. Marx called religion the opiate of the masses - he picked the wrong class of drugs, opiates numb people, they don't turn them into raving violent lunatics.
