In Canada you don't have the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution which says.

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed"

I firmly stand behind the founders of the USA that they were aware of the need for firearms and weaponery to keep the people safe from government oppression.
As it was then so it is now.
Armed citizens = Governed
Unarmed Citizens = Ruled
