As for your question, I agree, in Canada, you don't need a semi auto handgun because the government has already put laws in place that are so strict you can't legally use it anyway, except at the gun range. You have to call the police and tell them when you are transporting it, the exact path you are taking and the exact time. Once they start restricting stuff like that there is no point in owning it. I can't even legally fire it in my backyard, even though I live on a large acreage.
If I lived somewhere without such draconian rules, I would own one simply because they are fun to shoot. No other reason needed.
As for semi auto rifles and shotguns, why wouldn't you use them? Not having to manually eject the shells is more efficient. And because you can do cool shit like this:
