Totally agree. In the time it take so to express the tone, culture, attitude from which you want to engage your audience to a consultant you could just manage your networks. As your business evolves so will that engagement strategy.
I also agree that automating tweets and some other static updates through a system like hootsuite is all you should automate. Engaging the nuances of each particular audience within the nuances of each particular social ecosystem is important.
I think it better to become laser focused and provide more robust engagement on fewer networks then try to hit them all and miss your target completely.
