Ever been to Detroit? I drove down there last summer to go an office furniture manufacturer's factory. It was near where the riots started in 1967; 40+ years later there were still empty lots there.
I grew up in Detroit in the 60s and 70s so it's my "home city" so to speak and it looks like a war zone now. Yeah, it's about racism partially but if you look at the metro area as a whole (this includes the mostly white suburban areas) the whole area is little better than a shit hole now. After the energy crisis, the main industry the automakers and its associated business, failed to adapt to the times -- so the City of Detroit wins the prize because it is a fucked up place now... Other cities in Michigan and Ohio are well represented on that list also and for the same reasons.
The list is about misery and the quality of life. So where there are masses of poor, regardless of color, there is misery.
Why is NYC, NY on that list or New Orleans, LA not on that list?
